Regenerative Medicine's Challenge to Cure

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 - Hilton Americas-Houston, Texas, 9:15am - 4:00pm

A new one-day symposium, designed to introduce and showcase the exciting potential offered by the regenerative medicine research community.

Are you aware of the enabling technologies that are now available for the practicing clinician?

This first of its kind, interactive symposium will serve as a dynamic opportunity to better understand opportunities for patient treatment within the growing field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The forum will close the TERMIS-NA 2011 Conference and Expo, and will provide a unique opportunity to participate in a non-structured setting. Experts will discuss how regenerative medicine is poised to change the landscape of modern medicine. You'll interact with global experts who have come to Houston for the TERMIS-North America 2011 annual conference and recognized leaders who are willing to share their knowledge and project insight.

Approach
Research => Clinical Trials => Regulatory Pathways => Funding => Commercialization

By presenting the clinical pathways and challenges for some of the most disabling and debilitating diseases and injuries, researchers will offer in-depth discussions on the latest therapies available for several of the world's most problematic diseases and injuries. They'll also address therapies which offer the most promise for near-term cures. Presenters will candidly describe the challenges they have faced in discovering cures or treatments.

Each clinician will present the cause, the symptoms, the current treatment options and the results of a particular disease or injury. They will then lead a discussion with an audience of scientists, engineers, clinicians, biologists and others on the potential solutions to the challenges being presented.

Clinical translation including regulatory affairs, translational processes, funding and industry will be highlighted.

Focus areas include:
     >Bone      >Cartilage      >Neural Tissue

By sharing our knowledge, you will be able to:

Specific questions that will be discussed include:

Audience

All tissue engineering researchers (scientists, bioengineers, clinicians) who have an interest in translational research, moving basic research toward applications, and assessing the efficacy and effectiveness of potential new treatments.

This is a must-attend symposium for any clinician involved in and will be of most value if you are a clinician, medical student, resident, particularly from orthotics orthopedics, neurology neurosurgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, otorhinolarygology, academia, industry, government and others experts who are involved in translating scientific discovery into patient treatments.

Reduced registration available for 3 or more attendees from the same department. Contact Gina Saxton, gsaxton@conferencestrategists.com, for more information.

REGISTRATION NOTE: Prior registration for TERMIS-NA 2011 Annual Conference is not mandatory. TERMIS-NA members and non-members who have registered for the annual conference are welcome to attend.

Workshop Organizer
Mark E. K. Wong, DDS, Chairman and Program Director, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston

Dr. Mark Wong is a tenured Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, where he also serves as the Director of Residency Training. He holds clinical appointments to Memorial Hermann Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital, LBJ General Hospital and The Methodist Hospital. He also holds academic appointments with The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston and the Department of Bioengineering at Rice University.

Dr. Wong has actively served on a number of local and national committees and is currently President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery after serving many years as an examiner.

His clinical interests and research efforts have focused on maxillofacial traumatology, facial reconstruction, tissue engineering of bone and the biomechanical characterization and regeneration of the temporomandibular joint. He has delivered numerous CE courses and lectures in these areas both nationally and internationally and authored textbook chapters and papers on these subjects. Current research in the field of regenerative medicine is supported through NIH funding and the Department of Defense's Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine.
