The Awards
As approved unanimously by the TERMIS-EU Council the following awards will be given by the TERMIS-EU chapter:
- Career Achievement Award,
- Mid Term Career Award,
- Robert Brown Early Career Principal Investigator Award
- Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. Outstanding Student Award.
The criteria for each award were initially defined by the chair in this document and are presented to the council to review and approve.
Career Achievement Award
The Career Achievement Award will be awarded to an established researcher who has made long-term, landmark contributions to the TERM field. It will be given to a widely respected researcher who has contributed considerably to the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine field. It should acknowledge an individual for their outstanding, continued contributions to the field, which includes a sustained in time significant contribution to the literature.
This award is aimed towards a recognition of individuals that have made outstanding contributions to the field of TERM, with outputs of clear professional excellence in their area; for example as scientists, clinicians, educators and/or contributors to TERMIS activities. The awardee must have a proven record of excellence and an outstanding international recognition in the TERM arena. There should be a significant and profound evidence of the awardee's major contributions to the development and status of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine and its evolution as a field. The awardee should have carried out most of their career in the TERMIS-EU geographical area.
Mid Term Career Award
An award for individuals that are within 10-20 years after obtaining their PhD. The Midterm Career Award recognizes an individual, who has demonstrated outstanding achievements in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine research, during the midterm of their career with setting up a successful research group and clear evidence of outstanding performance.
ROBERT BROWN EARLY CAREER PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR AWARD
The Robert Brown Early Career Principal Investigator Award recognizes an individual, who has demonstrated outstanding achievements in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine research, during the early stages of their career with clear evidence of a growing profile.
Candidates for the TERMIS-EU Early Career Principal Investigator Award must have been awarded their first PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) more than 2 and less than 10 years prior to the deadline of the call.
Eligibility

The awardee must demonstrate evidence of high quality publications in highly cited journals, leadership activities, grant income from major funding bodies and external recognition amongst the wider international TERM community.
Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. Outstanding Student Award - Deadline for 2024 nomination packages is January 22, 2024
MAL Outstanding Student Award will be presented to a student (undergraduate/graduate) who has shown outstanding research accomplishments in the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine field. The student will be selected based upon the following requirements and criteria being met:
- a brief CV is provided outlining the career of the student
- a manuscript has been submitted or published within the past 12 months (January 2023 - January 2024) to the journal Tissue Engineering, Part A
- the manuscript does not need to be accepted at the time of nomination, but at a minimum it needs to be submitted
- the individual must be a member of TERMIS
- the manuscript must detail original research work
- potential awardees cannot self-nominate
- the individual must be nominated by a TERMIS member in good standing
- potential awardees must confirm their availability to attend the relevant Chapter conference or World Congress at which their award will be presented.
- Manuscript submitted or published within the past 12 months to be eligible (January 2023 - January 2024)
The manuscript of the winner of the award will be published in the journal, Tissue Engineering, Part A with appropriate recognition, as outlined below. The call for MAL Oustanding Student Award nominations will be announced prior to the annual conference of the Chapter in which the nominee resides or prior to the World Congress in those years a World Congress is held. The student will be selected by the respective Chapter’s Awards Committee.
The TERMIS Awards Committee requires the following information for each nominee:
- curriculum Vitae
- certification of student status
- manuscript submitted or published in Tissue Engineering, Part A within the 12 months (January 2023 - January 2024) prior to the relevant meeting
- one letter of recommendation
- a statement confirming attendance at the relevant TERMIS Chapter/World Congress conference should the nominee be successful.
The awardee will receive the following:
- TERMIS-Americas (TERMIS-AM), TERMIS-Europe (TERMIS-EU) and TERMIS-Asia-Pacific (TERMIS-AP) Chapter conferences:
- $500 USD Award from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
- $1000 USD travel support from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. to attend the TERMIS-EU Conference
- TERMIS Chapter sponsored registration waiver
- the opportunity to publish their research in Tissue Engineering (page charges and color art fees will be waived)
- In the year of the TERMIS World Congress (every 3-years):
- $1000 USD Award from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
- $1500 USD travel support from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. to attend the 2024 TERMIS World Congress
- TERMIS World Congress sponsored registration wavier for the recipient of the award
- Awardee will have the opportunity to publish their research in Tissue Engineering (page charges and color art fees will be waived).
- In the year of the World Congress, any individual eligible for the award and from any part of the world, can submit a nomination package based on the criteria outlined above. The chapter nominating committee that is hosting the World Congress will review the nominations received for consideration of the award.
Awards Committee
The Awards Committee will be chaired by the Immediate Past Chair of the TERMIS-EU chapter. The other members of the EU Awards Committee will be the current Chair and the Chair-Elect, as well as the SYIS-EU Chair (ex officio members of the committee). Two other members will be selected yearly for this committee based on the proposal of the Awards Committee Chair and approval of the TERMIS-EU Council. Any member of the committee that is not in executive office and is nominated for an award will have to resign from the committee for that particular year. A committee member, who resigns, will be replaced by another member proposed by the awards committee under approval of the TERMIS-EU Council.
Some Guidelines
- The council members will not be able to apply while in office.
- Self nomination is not permitted.
- All the awardees will be selected by the TERMIS-EU Awards Committee.
- All nominated candidates must be Members of the TERMIS-EU Chapter.
Each nomination to be received by the Awards Committee must include the following information:
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae of the nominee (no more than 5 pages);
- One (1) page summary detailing the major achievements of the nominee; and
- Two (2) letters of recommendation written by respected scientists/professionals working within the TERM field that are members of any chapter of TERMIS. Letters by members of the Awards Committee are not acceptable.
In the year of the World Congress, the recipients of the Robert Brown Early Career Principal Investigator, the Mid Term Career and the Career Achievement Awards will:
- Be presented with a plaque at the TERMIS World Congress
- Each recipient must confirm their attendance at the TERMIS World Congress
- Be provided with 30 minutes to present a lecture during an TERMIS-EU Awards Ceremony at the 2024 TERMIS World Congress
Issuance of Awards - TERMIS-EU Chapter Conferences (non World Congress Years)
In a non World Congress year, the recipient of the Career Achievement and the Mid Term Career Award will:
- Receive a complimentary registration to attend the TERMIS-EU Annual Conference
- Be presented with a plaque
- Be provided with 30 minutes to present a plenary lecture at the TERMIS-EU Annual Conference
- Each recipient must confirm their attendance at the TERMIS-EU Annual Conference.
In a non World Congress year, the recipient of the Robert Brown Early Career Principal Investigator Award will:
- Receive an honorarium of €1,000
- Be presented with a plaque
- Be provided with 30 minutes to present a plenary lecture at the TERMIS-EU Annual Conference
- Must confirm their attendance at the TERMIS-EU Annual Conference
- A complimentary registration to attend the TERMIS-EU Annual Conference
Timings and other relevant information
- Nominations must be received by 1st December.
- The TERMIS-EU Awards Committee will review the nomination packages received and provide the names of the award recipients by the first week of February. At this time, the awardees must confirm their attendance at the TERMIS-EU Annual Conference.
- All nomination packages for the TERMIS-EU Awards Program should be submitted to the TERMIS Administrator via email at swilburn@termis.org.
