TERMIS-EU PhD Award

Applications are due: March 20, 2026

PhD Award Application Form

The TERMIS-EU Doctoral Award was created to empower the next generation of researchers in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. By specifically encouraging PhD students to pursue part of their training and research in institutions from different countries (list of countries as annex – to be prepared), this award fosters international mobility, cross-cultural collaboration, and the exchange of complementary expertise. Such experiences are invaluable for building truly global networks of excellence, accelerating knowledge transfer, and exposing young researchers to diverse methodologies, infrastructures, and scientific perspectives.

Equally important, the award strengthens the visibility and impact of doctoral research by motivating students to actively disseminate their work through participation in international meetings and high-quality publications. This not only enhances the scientific standing of the awardees but also increases the visibility of TERMIS-EU as a driving force in shaping future innovation in the field. Ultimately, the TERMIS-EU Doctoral Award aims to create a virtuous cycle of excellence: empowering early-career researchers with international experience, amplifying the reach and relevance of their contributions, and consolidating the role of TERMIS-EU as a catalyst for advancing regenerative medicine and allied technologies across borders.

This award is given by the TERMIS-EU council and is presented during the Annual Conference of the TERMIS-EU. The winner will be given a certificate (signed by the TERMIS-EU Chair, the SYIS Chair and the Chair of the Inclusion, Diversity & Education Committee);

The candidate must be member in good standing of the TERMIS-EU at the time of application and fulfil the criteria described. Supervisors associated to the candidate must not be necessarily TERMIS-EU members. There is no additional selection process, so multiple awardees are expected.

The SYIS shall promote the award in the context of SYIS activities.

General Requirements:

  1. The candidate must have completed his/her Ph.D.in a relevant scientific area (Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, Stem Cells Biology, Bioengineering, Biomaterials, Materials Science, Biochemistry, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, etc.) before the deadline of the application, according to the rules of the University and the country where the Ph.D. has been registered. The application must be submitted within two years from the defense/viva voce examination.
  2. International Research Visits: the candidate must have spent at least one month of research work in at another institution (academic, clinical or industry) of a country different from that of the student’s home university (see list provided).
  3. International Publications: The candidate must have at least three published peer-reviewed international publications, of which two as first author. 1 Patent applications may be considered as equivalent to 1 publication (in this case, applicant may have 1 publication as first author instead of 2).
  4. Active Participation at International Meetings: the candidate must have at least three active participations as presenting author (poster or oral presentation) at an international meeting as presenting author (poster or oral) – at least one of them must be an TERMIS-EU or TERMIS World conference. For PhD students who have performed their PhD work within the context of an European project, 1 presentation of their own work at one of the project’s meetings or workshops can also be considered.

Eligibility Check and Nomination:

The Inclusion, Diversity & Education Committee of the TERMIS-EU will analyze the application and may return to applicant in case some element is missing to verify eligibility, before proceeding with the nomination of the Candidate.

  • The Education Committee verifies eligibility of candidates according to the above mentioned criteria and proposes the nomination to the Council
  • The formal TERMIS-EU PhD Award Certificate document is handed over to the awardee on occasion of the next coming TERMIS-EU annual conference (the following year when the TERMIS-EU conference is replaced by the TERMIS-World Congress).

Applications and supporting data should be sent to the TERMIS Administrator Sarah Wilburn (swilburn@termis.org).
